"The madness came into his eyes again. "I thought I might kill". This helps support that Jack had an effect on the story. Jack never said he would kill a pig, just in general that he would kill. The madness in his eyes is making him become more and more violent.
Jack torturing every one is fueling more and more of his violence. When he breaks off of the group and no one joins him at first, the anger makes hime more blood thirsty. Jack's temper makes him more and more angry, leading others to become violent and actually kill a kid.
